Rana e Madhe, Rana e Hedhun · Shëngjin
The beach, the restaurant and the bar on the sand of Rana e Hedhun.
The place
Rana e Hedhun is one of the most fascinating destinations in northern Albania. In the Gheg dialect the name literally means «thrown sand», after the dunes and pristine formations along its coast. Sand thrown by the north wind — the Murlani — has formed over centuries a dune perpendicular to the mountain.
After the second world war the whole coast became an impassable border zone and tourism was a state monopoly: you could not even enter «the thrown sand» for a swim. After 1991 the coast returned to the people, which is why it remains one of the last areas still not urbanised. Just 3–4 km from Shëngjin, still largely unexplored by mass tourism: a rare Mediterranean landscape.
